Recruiting Officers

RECRUITING NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS

You might look for new members in the following situations:

  1. When first setting up a club.
  2. If some of your committee members have left or plan to leave.
  3. If you feel your committee needs reinvigorating.
  4. If your committee needs additional skills and experience, such as governance, finance, or marketing.
  5. During your AGM.

Recruiting new committee members is an opportunity to develop or bring new skills, experiences, and perspectives to your governance. Regularly conducting a skills audit can help identify any gaps.

BE DIVERSE

Your committee should reflect the diverse nature of your members. Are the committee roles occupied by a diverse range of people? For example, if your club has a growing youth section, consider involving a youth representative. However, remember that no one under 18 can be a committee member for an unincorporated association.

BE BUSINESSLIKE

If you need a specific skill, target the right audience. For example:

  1. If you need a new treasurer, target accountancy firms.
  2. If you need someone to handle sponsorship, target businesspeople experienced in negotiations.
  3. If you need a press officer, see if any of your members are journalists or journalism students.

BE TRANSPARENT

When looking for new committee members, spread the word and clearly define the role you are recruiting for. Create a role description and be honest about the responsibilities and time commitment involved.

BE PROFESSIONAL

Refer to your constitution as there should be rules in place regarding the recruitment of officers. Know whether nominations for new committee members must be taken in advance or can be taken at the meeting. Most AGMs require a proposer and a seconder for each nomination.

Comply with safeguarding guidance and seek any necessary DBS checks. You can find more information in our Disclosure and Barring Service section.

By following these guidelines, you can effectively recruit new committee members who will contribute to the growth and success of your club.
