Afterschool Esports Club at Gwent Is Coed: Empowering Welsh Language through Gaming

Posted by Esports Wales October 13, 2024 in Esports

The Video Games Club at Gwent Is Coed in Newport hosted another exciting session, bringing students together to enjoy their favorite games. What sets this club apart is its focus on the Welsh language, creating a unique environment where students continue speaking Welsh outside of their traditional classroom settings.

As video games are often played in English, the afterschool club provides a crucial opportunity for students to engage in an activity they love while strengthening their Welsh language skills. It’s a space where they can communicate and collaborate in Welsh, making language use a natural and fun part of their daily routine.

The club is proving to be a great success, and its potential for fostering both community and language retention is clear. I believe there are more opportunities for this initiative to grow. By collaborating and potentially applying for joint funding, we could expand the club for the next academic year, enhancing its reach and impact. This could allow for more resources, better equipment, and perhaps even the chance to host tournaments or larger events in Welsh, helping to promote bilingualism through esports.

If there are any opportunities for partnership or collaborative efforts, I would be excited to explore those possibilities to help ensure the club’s continued success. Together, we could make a significant difference in supporting Welsh culture and language through esports.
