Fresh on the heels of their Welsh Esports College and Schools Cup win, Dregiau Cwm Rhymni of Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni have been gathering momentum on their British Esports Rocket League Student Champs – Open run.

They started their play for the title back on October 11th with an inaugural Round 1 match against St Michael’s Seraphim which saw them walk away with a 3-0 win (12-0, 6-0, 10-2), which set the tone for the coming matches for the Winter North Swiss Stage.

The team made up of three year 11 pupils from the school’s Gwyndy campus added wins against NCL Vikings, CAVC Celts RL”, Steel City Rockets, AGSB B, BSA Griffins RL with a loss to Wales_Dragons_RL1 in Round 3:

Placing 4th out of 78 teams in the Winter North Swidd Stage behind GCS Owls RL1, St. David’s Dynamo Drifters and Halestrom gave Wales three of the top five teams.

Cwm Rhymni moved on to the Spring North Division 1 stage of the competition and finished 2nd of sixteen teams behind GCS Owls RL1, managing to win three of their four matches – narrowly losing to GCS Owls RL1 with only having two players against a full and very talented group from the Swansea Bay region:

They moved on to the Spring Division 1 Elimination stage and played out a hard fought win in the Last 16 match against HSDC Storm with a 3-2! 5 match thriller:

  • Dreigiau Cwm Rhymni 3 – 2 HSDC Storm (3-1, 2-3, 4-2, 2-5, 3-0)

For the Quarter Final match against WVR Wolfpack of Warrington and Vale Royal College the Dreigiau wanted to focus more on their defence and they sure did, they were emphatic with the win proving too much for the Northern English outfit. Cwm Rhymni came home with a 3-0 win and a complete clean sheet with the coaches managing to keep some of their nails in the second game with a final few seconds goal:

They now move onto the Semi Finals against their Sheffield nemesis (Wales_Dragons_RL1) who beat them in the 3rd Round of the Swiss Stage.

Come 4PM on the 17th of April, all eyes will be on Dreigiau Cwm Rhymni as they fly our flag once again.
