Posted by esportswales February 16, 2023 in ADVICE

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, gaming can be a wonderful escape from reality and a way to connect with others. However, it’s important to be aware of the challenges that can arise, such as encountering hate speech or feeling isolated. That’s why we at Esports Wales have put together this list of advice for LGBTQ+ gamers. Whether you’re just starting out or have been gaming for a while, these tips will help you navigate the gaming world and find a supportive community. So get ready to join forces with like-minded individuals, embrace your identity, and game on!

Join a supportive community: Look for online communities, forums or Discord servers that cater specifically to LGBTQ+ gamers. These communities can provide a safe space to connect with others and share experiences.

Be yourself: Don’t be afraid to be open and honest about your sexual orientation or gender identity while gaming. You’ll likely find that the gaming community is more accepting and inclusive than you think.

Avoid harmful environments: If you come across any homophobic, transphobic, or other forms of hate speech, it’s best to move on and find a more inclusive community.

Seek allies: Try to find allies in your gaming community who support and stand up for the LGBTQ+ community.

Support inclusive games: Support game developers and publishers who create inclusive content and stand against hate speech.

Report abuse: If you encounter any abuse or harassment, use the reporting tools provided by the gaming platform to report the behavior.

Take breaks: Gaming can be a great way to escape reality, but it’s important to take breaks and engage in other activities.

Find like-minded friends: Consider reaching out to other LGBTQ+ gamers to form friendships and play games together. Esports Wales runs LGBTQ+ events in the discord server if you need somewhere to start!

Take care of your mental health: Gaming can be a great stress reliever, but it’s important to remember to prioritize your mental health and seek support if needed.

Celebrate Pride: Take part in virtual or real-life events to celebrate Pride Month and show support for the LGBT community.

Remember, you are not alone and there is a supportive community out there waiting for you. Embrace the amazing person you are and never let anyone make you feel otherwise.
