Staff Introduction – Curio

Posted by John Jackson April 24, 2019 in COMMUNITY
Today we sat down with Curio aka Tom Bagot.
What is your gamer tag and how did you get the name?
Curio – inspired from a roguelike RPG, Darkest Dungeon
What age did you start playing games and what’s the first game you remember playing?
Remember my first game at the age of 4 being Quake 3, but didn’t start playing games properly until I was 7 on the PS2.
What made you decide to pursue a role in Esports?
Me and a few friends from the Swansea Gaming Society made an Overwatch team that was relatively successful in local events at the 24 hour LANs and Talk and Surf’s monthly tournaments. Other gaming communities in the area weren’t as built up and so joined the committee as the esports admin to share similar experiences with others. This led to the development of the Swansea Storm teams and has had a great first year with 6 teams going to LANs across the country. During this time, I joined The NUEL as the Overwatch Product Manager to further my esports role.
What’s your all time favourite game?
Modern Warfare 2 and League of Legends are both highlights!
What is a typical day like for you?
As a full time student at Swansea University studying materials science and engineering, a lot of my time is currently spent on education 9-4 Mon-Fri. My course focusses on practical and coursework based work on titanium, carbon fibres and aluminium alloys.
What do you like to do when you aren’t gaming or working in gaming?
When not gaming or working, I prefer to chill out with watching films and series as well as swimming. 🏊
Can you give any advice to anyone looking to start working in the Esports industry?
Apart from the obvious ‘volunteer and make connections’ ensure that you have a strong, confident social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, Discord as well as LinkedIn. Having links to each of your socials and having pinned contact details or recent works makes you stand out much more! Make sure you know what interests you before going into the industry, with front stage roles such as casting, hosting or playing or would prefer to be behind the scenes with admining, production, tech support and networking or graphics design. Only mentioned a few examples but focusing on one or two roles gives you a solid start, especially if you’re picking two for a bit more flexibility.
Any shout-outs?
The Swansea Gaming Committees from 17/18 and 18/19 – notably @EsportsMurphy as well as @Deaniish and @SunkernOW from The NUEL!
