Staff Introduction – Deltabacon

Posted by John Jackson July 6, 2020 in COMMUNITY
Today we sat down with Deltabacon aka Thomas Sloan.
What is your gamer tag and how did you get the name?
Deltabacon – I used to be known as Deltaflyer, then on a forum someone referred to me as Deltabacon, the name stuck and here we are!

What age did you start playing games and what’s the first game you remember playing?
Very young, I can’t put a number to it, but my first memory of games was playing Red Alert with my father on a Windows ’98 for hours and hours on end!
What made you decide to pursue a role in Esports?

I first got into eSports through the Belong Arena Clash, quite by accident! When the Nottingham Belong Arena closed (my local one) and I realised there was no grassroots path into eSports I looked at my university for a pathway. Seeing that Trent had no eSports framework I resolved to create one, which now gives the students at Trent a team to play for in every NSE and NUEL sport! I fell quite by accident again into casting, my good friend @Muhcreedy had gotten in contact with eSports Wales about casting, recommended me and I said yes. Casting over the Rocket League and R6:Siege streams for the Open in March was hugely enjoyable, and prompted interest in the production of content. When the opportunity came up to pursue this with eSports Wales, in an organisation that echos my own goals, aims and values, I jumped at the chance to sign up!

What’s your all time favourite game?
Rocket League, Rainbow Six: Siege, Arma 3 or Eve Online depending on which way the wind is blowing!
What is a typical day like for you?
Well at the moment, with university deadlines creeping up, it’s a little different. Nowadays it is usually; sit down to work, try not to cry, cry a lot! In less stressful final year times, I enjoy cooking so I’ll either get the things I need for a nice meal at the end of the day, or get the ball rolling if I’m making a long-cooking meal like soup or something. Play a few games with my good friend Muhcreedy or one of the various gaming communities I am a member of, and several days this is interspersed with gym time and training for playing Rugby League!
What do you like to do when you aren’t gaming or working in gaming?
So as above, I quite enjoy cooking, I’m an avid rugby league fan, be it watching or playing! I also frequent a climbing hangar, since I caught the bug for high-ropes and climbing sports when I worked as an activity instructor in North Wales!
Can you give any advice to anyone looking to start working in the Esports industry?

It’s a growth industry. If you have the underlying passion then you just need to act on it. Shout about it, talk to friends about it and look for opportunities to help others get into and run eSports events! I created my university’s eSports framework with google drive, discord and facebook. They now have 25 teams in 7 different games. It’ll surprise you what’s possible so there’s no reason to not make things happen!

Any shout-outs?
Muhcreedy – Thank you for introducing me to eSports Wales. JakeyBoyPro – Cheers for taking me under your wing. SlayerJohn – For creating an organisation that matches my personal goals. Belong Arenas Nottingham – In Memoriam, cheers for getting me into eSports!
