Staff Introduction – SlayerJohn

What is your gamer tag and how did you get the name?
I can’t really remember why I picked $lay3r all the way back when I started gaming. I think it was either linked to the band Slayer or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, cool right! lol, I am not really a lover of the name and did try to change it to John and other alternatives over the years but either people didn’t know who you were or would call you Slayer anyway! Over the years it has morphed into SlayerJohn, but yeah, just call me John.
What age did you start playing games and what’s the first game you remember playing?
I started playing games at a early age 6-7 on the Sega megadrive. Games like Sonic, Streets of rage, Golden axe, Mortal Kombat, Micro machines etc. It was followed by the Nintendo 64, PlayStation 1 and Gameboy. At the age of about 12-13 I started getting into building PCs and PC Gaming, and picked up a few other consoles along the way.
What made you decide to pursue a role in Esports?
I don’t think I ever really decided to move into Esports its just kinda how it happened. I have always preferred games when you are playing with other people. Whether that is on the same side or against one and other. I have had a shoulder issue since birth which never meant that I was going to set the sporting world alight lol, I guess some of the Esports and co-op games I have played have allowed me get some of the sporting camaraderie, and make some good friends throughout the years.
What’s your all time favourite game?
I don’t really have one, I loved games with Tony Hawk when I was young and everyone trying to beat each others high score. I played CS 1.6 a lot when I was younger, then Starcraft 2 for a few years. I then made the switch to League of legends, and now I tend to jump on Overwatch when I have a spare 5 minutes.
What is a typical day like for you?
Sadly I struggle with time so I try to keep to my schedule the best I can. 7-8 Morning routine 8-4:30 Work 4:30 – 6:00 Fitness 7:00 – 10:00 Game
What do you like to do when you aren’t gaming or working in gaming?
I try to live a balanced life, so while gaming keeps me indoors playing I try to get outdoors with most of my other hobbies. I do a lot of cycling, hiking, running, photography, also the odd climbing, SUPing etc.
Can you give any advice to anyone looking to start working in the Esports industry?
Networking is big part of getting into the industry. To finding the right team mates, streaming communities or job opportunities. Having your twitter, twitch and other social media outlets sorted will help you massively.
